Why it belongs
The best time to plant a tree
A tree is the most generous thing you can plant. It cools your home, shelters birds, and marks the seasons for everyone who passes. Small ornamentals fit a front yard and bloom in spring. Shade trees grow into the green roof of a backyard. Fruit trees feed you. Choose a tree that fits its space when fully grown, not the size it is today. Look for a straight trunk, a single leader, and roots that fill the pot without circling. A healthy young tree outgrows a stressed large one within a few years.
Make it thrive
Planting and the first years
Dig a hole two to three times the width of the root ball and just as deep. Find the root flare, where the trunk widens at the base, and keep it at or slightly above ground level. Remove wire, burlap and any tags. Backfill with the native soil and water slowly until it settles. Mulch in a wide circle, never against the trunk. Stake only if the site is windy, and remove stakes after one year. Water deeply once a week for the first two seasons. Do not fertilize in the first year. Let the roots do the work.

Helpful answers
Frequently asked questions
When should I plant a tree?
Spring and fall. Cooler air and warm soil help roots establish with less stress.
How long until it gives shade?
Fast growers give useful shade in five to eight years. Slower trees take longer but live longer.
Can I plant a tree near the house?
Yes, with the right tree. Ask us for small ornamentals that stay within 15 to 25 feet.
