Why it belongs

The plants that make a garden feel finished

Shrubs give a garden its bones. They screen a view, frame a door, and hold the beds together when the perennials go quiet. Many flower for weeks. Some offer fall colour, berries for birds, or bright stems in winter. A well chosen shrub is the best value in the garden. It will be there for decades. Choose for mature size first. A plant that fits its space needs little pruning and always looks right. Then choose for the season you want it to shine.

Make it thrive

Planting for a long life

Dig a hole twice as wide as the pot and no deeper. The top of the root ball should sit level with the soil around it. Loosen any circling roots. Backfill with the soil you removed, firm it gently, and water slowly until the ground is soaked. Mulch a wide ring around the base, keeping it off the stem. Water deeply each week for the first year. Most shrubs need little pruning. Remove dead wood any time. Shape spring bloomers right after they flower, and summer bloomers in early spring.

Panicle hydrangeas, spirea, potentilla and reblooming weigela give the longest show.
