Why it belongs

Choose with confidence

A good pot is part of the design. Glazed ceramic holds moisture and comes in every colour. Terracotta breathes and suits herbs and succulents. Lightweight resin and fibre pots move easily and survive winter. Match the pot to the plant's mature size. Roots need room, and a larger pot dries out slower. Every pot needs a drainage hole. Without one, roots sit in water and rot. Group three pots of different heights for a display that looks finished.

Make it thrive

Planting and caring for containers

Use a quality potting mix, never garden soil. Fill to an inch below the rim. Set plants so the root ball sits just under the surface. Water until it drains from the bottom. Containers dry faster than beds, so check daily in summer heat. Feed every two weeks through the growing season. In cold climates, empty terracotta and ceramic pots before winter, or move them under cover. Frost can crack them. Resin and fibre pots can stay out.

Helpful answers

Frequently asked questions

Does my pot need a drainage hole?

Yes. If it has none, use it as a cover pot with a plastic nursery pot inside.

Can I leave ceramic pots out in winter?

Empty them and store them dry, or they may crack. Frost resistant pots are marked.

What size pot do I need?

Two inches wider than the current root ball for repotting. For mixed displays, 14 inches or more.
