Hands harvesting fresh basil

Why it belongs

Fresh from your own garden

Nothing tastes like a tomato you grew yourself. A few pots of herbs by the kitchen door change how you cook. You do not need a big space. A sunny balcony grows salad, herbs and cherry tomatoes. A single raised bed feeds a family through the summer. Start with what you like to eat. Choose sturdy transplants with deep green leaves and no flowers yet. They settle in fast and outgrow anything started from seed at home.

Make it thrive

Sun, soil and water

Most edibles want six hours of sun or more. Give them rich soil with compost mixed in. Plant after the last frost, when the soil is warm. Water deeply and evenly. Uneven watering splits tomatoes and makes lettuce bitter. Mulch with straw to keep soil moist and fruit clean. Feed every few weeks with a vegetable fertilizer. Pick often. The more you harvest, the more the plant produces. Plant a second round of lettuce and herbs in mid summer for a fall crop.

Helpful answers

Frequently asked questions

What can I grow in containers?

Herbs, lettuce, peppers, cherry tomatoes and strawberries all thrive in pots with a drainage hole.

When can I plant tomatoes?

After the last frost, once nights stay warm. Ask us for the safe date in our area.

Why do my herbs keep dying indoors?

Not enough light. Herbs need a bright south window or a grow light, and soil that dries between waterings.
