Why it belongs

Colour you can count on

Annuals bloom from the day you plant them until frost. They ask for nothing more than sun, water and a little food. Use them to fill gaps in beds, to pack containers and window boxes, or to line a path. Change your palette every year if you like. Nothing gives more colour for less effort. Pick plants that are compact and bushy with buds showing. Avoid any that are tall and leggy. Check the tag for sun or shade and match it to your spot.

Make it thrive

Keep them blooming

Plant in well drained soil or a quality potting mix once nights are warm. Water when the top inch of soil feels dry. Containers dry out faster than beds, so check them daily in hot weather. Feed every two weeks with a liquid fertilizer. Pinch off faded flowers and the plant will push out more. If growth slows in mid summer, trim plants back by a third and feed them. They bounce back fast. At season's end, pull them and compost them. Next year, start fresh.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between annuals and perennials?

Annuals live one season and bloom the whole time. Perennials return each year but bloom for a shorter window.

How many plants do I need for a container?

One thriller, two or three fillers and a trailer fills a 12 inch pot. Pack them closer than you think.

Can I plant annuals in shade?

Yes. Impatiens, begonias, coleus and lobelia all colour a shady corner.
